Bob Downunder - February 2003 - CEDAR Database

February 6, 2003 - Canberra, Australia [top]

Disc 1 - Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum (Bob on piano), I'll Be Your Baby Tonight (Bob on piano), Highway 61 Revisited (Bob on piano), I'll Remember You (Bob on piano), Things Have Changed (Bob on piano), Brown Sugar (Bob on piano), Saving Grace (Bob on piano), Don't Think Twice It's All Right @ (Bob on guitar then piano, Tony on standup bass), Sugar Baby (Bob on Piano, Tony on standup bass), Drifter's Escape

Disc 2 - One Too Many Mornings @ (Bob on guitar and then piano), Honest With Me, It Ain't Me Babe @, Masters Of War @, Forever Young @, Summer Days (Tony on standup bass), Blowin' In The Wind @, All Along The Watchtower

Have artwork. CEDAR 1 (At the top of "Highway 61," a male voice yells, "You've still got it, Bob."  Crisp, clear recording with unobtrusive crowd. Apparently, on all circulating copies there are beeps at 3:38 and 4:33 of "Saving Grace" and at 0:05, 1:37 and 2:15 of "Don't Think Twice."). CEDAR 2 - Much better version - not fully listed on CEDAR yet  - at the start of Brown Sugar male voice calls out for Visions Of Johanna followed by Dunedin Doug's faint call for Brown Sugar - bingo!I was at this concert.

February 8, 2003 - Melbourne, Australia [top]

Disc 1 - Seeing The Real You At Last, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Highway 61 Revisited, You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, Things Have Changed, Drifter's Escape, Just Like A Woman, Lonesome Day Blues, One Too Many Mornings @, Honest With Me

Disc 2 - Saving Grace, Bye And Bye, Summer Days, Blowin' In The Wind @, All Along The Watchtower

Have artwork. Poor recording.  CEDAR 2 (Recording begins with voice saying, "Larry... here's Larry." Complete recording, but marked by frequent singing and talking by taper and friends. Distorts at points and is generally bass-heavy). I was at this concert.

Incomplete version (single disc): Seeing The Real You At Last, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight, Highway 61 Revisited, You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, Things Have Changed, Drifter's Escape, Just Like A Woman, Lonesome Day Blues, One Too Many Mornings @, Honest With Me, Saving Grace, Bye And Bye

Have artwork. CEDAR 1 (Incomplete mini-disc recording, cutting at 4:48 of "Bye and Bye" and missing the encore. Very listenable though apart from a number of skips on some tracks.)

February 11, 2003 - Brisbane, Australia [top]

Disc 1 - Maggie's Farm (Bob on piano), I'll Be Your Baby Tonight (Bob on piano and harp and Larry on pedal steel guitar), Highway 61 Revisited (Bob on piano), You Ain't Goin' Nowhere (Bob on piano and harp and Larry on pedal steel guitar), Things Have Changed (Bob on piano), The Wicked Messenger (Bob on electric guitar and harp), It's All Over Now Baby Blue @ (Larry on pedal steel guitar), Masters Of War @, Forever Young @, Don't Think Twice It's All Right

Disc 2 - Watching The River Flow (Bob on piano and harp), Honest With Me (Bob on piano), Saving Grace (Bob on piano and Larry on pedal steel guitar), High Water (For Charley Patton) (Bob on piano), Moonlight (Bob on piano and Tony on standup bass), Summer Days (Bob on piano then guitar then back to piano and Tony on standup bass), It Ain't Me Babe @ (Bob on harp), All Along The Watchtower (Bob on electric guitar)

Bob with Billy Burnett (Brisbane 2003).  Have artwork. CEDAR 1 (At end of concert after "Watchtower," a male voice asks, "Did you see the Academy Award on the side there?". Doublespeed minidisc recording. Some reporters have complained of the sound, citing its heaviness, its bassiness, its lack of separation, and its overall instrumental muddiness. Others think that the high saturation of the recording gives it a lot of presence and character. Well worth a listen.) I was at this concert.

February 13, 2003 - Adelaide, Australia [top]

Disc 1 - Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum (Bob on piano, Larry and Billy on Telecasters, Tony on electric bass), I'll Be Your Baby Tonight (Bob on piano and harp, Larry on pedal steel, Bill on Telecaster, Tony on electric bass), Highway 61 Revisited (Bob on piano, Larry & Bill on Telecasters, Tony on electric bass), I'll Remember You (Bob on piano, Larry on pedal steel, Billy on Telecaster, Tony on electric bass), Things Have Changed (Bob on piano, Larry on Stratocaster, Bill on Telecaster, Tony on electric bass), Cold Irons Bound (Bob and Larry on Stratocasters, Bill on Telecaster, Tony on electric bass), Girl Of The North Country @, Masters Of War @, Mama You Been On My Mind @ (Bob on harp), It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) @ (Bob on piano, Larry on cittern, Billy on acoustic guitar, Tony on standup bass)

Disc 2 - Lay Lady Lay @ (Bob on acoustic guitar, Larry on pedal steel, Billy on Telecaster, Tony on standup bass), Honest With Me (Bob on piano, Larry on slide guitar, Billy on Telecaster, Tony on standup bass), Bye And Bye (Bob on piano, Larry on semi-acoustic Gretch, Billy on semi-acoustic Gibson, Tony on standup bass), Summer Days (Bob on piano then Stratocastere then piano, Larry on semi-acoustic Gretch, Billy on Telecaster, Tony on standup bass), Forever Young @ (Tony on acoustic bass), All Along The Watchtower (Bob on Stratocaster, Larry and Bill on Telecasters, Tony on electric bass)

Have artwork. CEDAR 2 (Male voice says "Yeah" and then recites the introduction along with Al Santos. Very loud crowd near taper, talking, clapping, and singing (questionably) - probably most would consider this crowd too obtrusive. Recording otherwise quite good, with Bob's voice and keys quite clear, and decent depth to the sound in general.)  CEDAR 3 - better (Before "Lay Lady Lady," Aussie bloke asks, "Where's the guitar, Bob?". Clear and crisp recording, with good separation. Beginning of Al Santos's intro is cut. Also, there's a cut on the master between "Honest With Me" and "Bye and Bye.")  I was at this concert.

February 15, 2003 - Perth, Australia [top]

Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum, I'll Be Your Baby Tonight (Bob on harp), Highway 61 Revisited, Just Like A Woman, Things Have Changed, Drifter's Escape (Bob on harp), Don't Think Twice It's All Right @, Masters Of War @, Honest With Me, Bye And Bye, Summer Days, All Along The Watchtower

Have artwork. CEDAR 1 (During the first instrumental break in "Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum," two men are in conversation near the taper, and one says, "In the event that there's a crowd surge, what I'm asking you to do is lift him up."  Clear, well balanced, with reasonable separation, but recorded too "hot," causing distortion at a number of points (mainly from crowd cheers). Also there's some very distracting crowd conversation. On the whole the sound is thin and lacking warmth, and the vocals are more buried than you'd hope for.) I was at this concert.

February 17, 2003 - Sydney, Australia [top]

Disc 1 - Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum (Bob on piano), I'll Be Your Baby Tonight (Bob on piano and harp, Larry on pedal steel guitar), Highway 61 Revisited (Bob on piano), Just Like A Woman (Bob on piano, Larry on pedal steel guitar), Things Have Changed (Bob on piano), Cold Irons Bound, Don't Think Twice It's All Right @, Masters Of War @, One Too Many Mornings @ (Larry on pedal steel guitar), Lonesome Day Blues (Bob on piano), Make You Feel My Love (Bob on piano)

Disc 2 - Honest With Me (Bob on piano), Bye And Bye (Bob on piano, Bill on acoustic guitar, Tony on upright bass), Summer Days (Bob on piano, Tony on upright bass), Blowin' In The Wind @, All Along The Watchtower

Have artwork. CEDAR 1 (Just before "Bye and Bye," two men share their positive opinions of Bob: "You're number one, Bob" and "You're a legend."  Nice recording, with good overall sound and unobtrusive crowd chatter. Vocals a little echoey.) I was at this concert.

February 18, 2003 - Newcastle, Australia [top]

Disc 1 - Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum (Bob on piano), I'll Be Your Baby Tonight (Bob on piano and harp, Larry on pedal steel), Highway 61 Revisited (Bob on piano), It's All Over Now Baby Blue (Bob on piano, Larry on pedal steel, Tony on standup bass), Things Have Changed (Bob on piano), The Wicked Messenger (Bob on harp), Boots Of Spanish Leather @, Masters Of War @, Mama You Been On My Mind @, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (Bob on piano and harp, Larry on cittern), Mr. Tambourine Man @ (Bob on piano)

Disc 2 - Honest With Me (Bob on piano), Moonlight (Bob on piano, Tony on standup bass), Summer Days (Bob on piano, Tony on standup bass), Blowin' In The Wind @, All Along The Watchtower

Have artwork. CEDAR 1 (Two fingerprints: at 8:24 of d1 t4, a whistle in the right channel; at 5:47 of d2 t4, a cough in the left. VG-EX recording. Good clarity, good balance, good separation, with the bass just a little too heavy.) I was at this concert.

February 21, 2003 - Auckland, New Zealand [top]

Disc 1 - Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum (Bob on piano), I'll Be Your Baby Tonight (Bob on piano and harp, Larry on pedal steel), Highway 61 Revisited (Bob on piano), Just Like A Woman, Things have Changed, Drifter's Escape, It's All Over Now Baby Blue, Don't Think Twice It's Alright, Masters Of War, Watching The River Flow

Disc 2 - Simple Twist Of Fate, Honest With Me, Bye & Bye, Happy Birthday (to Larry), Summer Days, Blowin' In The Wind @, All Along The Watchtower

Have artwork. CEDAR 1 (At the beginning of "Masters of War," a male voice says, "Security, get him outta here... go get the security." Average/good quality recording, with good separation but lacking in sharpness. Noticeable crowd conversations, but not too disturbing. Also, there is some quiet buzzing in the left channel, and a few clicks and pops as well.). CEDAR 3 - better (At the very end of the recording, someone asks, "Were you taping it?" -- "Pardon? No." Very clean mini-disc recording, with good power and range and little crowd noise. "Precise, if a little clinical." Recorded right in front of left-side speakers.)

February 22, 2003 - Auckland, New Zealand [top]

Disc 1 - Tweedle Dee & Tweedle Dum (Bob on piano, Larry & Billy on Telecasters, Tony on electric bass), I'll Be Your Baby Tonight (Bob on piano & harp, Larry on pedal steel, Billy on Telecaster, Tony on electric bass), Highway 61 Revisited (Bob on piano & harp, Larry & Billy on Telecasters, Tony on electric bass), You Ain't Goin' Nowhere (Bob on piano & harp, Larry on pedal steel, Billy on Telecaster, Tony on electric bass), Things Have Changed (Bob & Larry on Stratocasters, Billy on Telecaster, Tony on electric bass), Cold Irons Bound (Bob on piano, Larry on Stratocaster, Billy on Telecaster, Tony on electric bass), It Ain't Me Babe @, Mr. Tambourine Man @, Masters Of War @, Tangled Up In Blue @ (Bob on piano and harp),

Disc 2 - Positively 4th Street (Bob on stratocaster, Larry & Billy on Telecasters, Tony on electric bass), Honest With Me (Bob on piano, Larry on slide guitar, Billy on Telecaster, Tony on electric bass), Moonlight (Bob on piano, Larry on semi-acoustic Gretch, Billy on semi-acoustic Gibson, Tony on standup bass), Summer Days (Bob on piano, Larry on semi-acoustic Gretch, Billy on Telecaster, Tony on standup bass), Forever Young @ (Bob on harp), All Along The Watchtower (Bob on stratocaster, Larry & Billy on Telecasters, Tony on electric bass)

Have artwork. CEDAR 1 (A- range. Not perfect in the sound department, but very listenable. Minor static at d2 t1 5:30, and glitches at a number of points in d2 t3 - 1:31, 2:13, 2:58-3:05). CEDAR 3 - better (An "older" male voice, 9 seconds before "Bye and Bye," says, "Got too loud." [If you can't take the heat...] Very clean minidisc recording, capturing everything from bass to cymbals cleanly. Separation could be better. I was at this concert.

February 24, 2003 - Wellington, New Zealand [top]
