Offmaster audience recording. Audio cdr> (Feurio) wav > (flac frontend) flac. As reported by Watt Alexander in the "Gospel Project", there appears to be a single master recording from which all circulating versions derive. The present offmaster recording is one where the "girls' songs" have been omitted. Apparently there is a circulating version where these songs have been retained. The recording is however, somewhat jumbled in that the end of disk one is a fragment of applause and the first few words of "What Can I Do for You?", but then disk two starts with four clearly extraneous tracks. At this point the 11-10 concert resumes with a complete "What Can I Do for You?" (crowd noise here conforms to the fragment at end of disk one) and continues through to the end of the concert. The following evaluation by Watt Alexander of what he takes to be the finest sequence of songs in this concert is worth quoting: "The concert remains quite good, but really hits its stride with "Solid Rock," "Saving Grace," "Saved" and "What Can I Do For You," which form the spiritual homestretch of these concerts. This is the first night Dylan repositions "Saved" before "What Can I Do For You" and the results are stunning. Were this simply a matter of arranging an established setlist, it would hardly be worth remarking upon. However, these four songs were, at the time, unreleased and likely completely new to the vast majority of the audience. Dylan leads into these songs with a defiant rap, commenting upon the "rabble" who consider the Gospel as mere "foolishness," and evoking the apparent wrath of some within the audience. "Having provoked the audience, Dylan then simply overwhelms them. In these four songs, Dylan alternately puts the band through quintessential rock-n-roll rave ups and astonishingly intimate confessions, with the former stirring them to a lather, silencing them on a whisper with the latter. Here Dylan exhibits his mastery of the live performance, tearing through "Solid Rock" and, in a matter of seconds, undermining raucous applause and drawing the entire theater in to the gentle prayer: "If you find it in your heart, can I be forgiven?" He then reaccelerates, ripping through the double-barrelled gospel stomp, Saved, then draws them all back in for the plaintive "What Can I Do For You." Each time, first moving their bodies, then hanging them on each note of his circuitous guitar and harp solos. The sheer audacity, or simple brazen faith, he has in his music and his message during these concerts is a monument to the man's artistry and his determination to bring his art to bear on the full scope of his experience. The audience, believer and non-believer alike, are left dumbstruck and cheering for more." November 11, 1979 - Warfield, San Francisco - 2 CDs [top] Disc 1 - Gotta Serve Somebody, I Believe In You, When You Gonna Wake Up, When He Returns, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, Precious Angel, Slow Train, Covenant Woman, Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking, Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others), Solid Rock, Saving Grace, Saved Disc 2 - What Can I Do For You?, In The Garden, Blessed Be The Name, Pressing On Offmaster audience recording. Audio CDR > (Feurio) wav > (flac frontend) > flac. As the "Gospel Project" puts it: "November 11th is another very fine show capping a strong six-performance week. From the first notes of "Serve Somebody," Dylan and the band are on, and the momentum simply builds. If the first half is simply very good, the entire second half of the concert is superlative. Any of these performances could fit on a "Best of Warfield 1979" collection." November 13, 1979 - Warfield, San Francisco - 2 CDs [top] Disc 1 - Gotta Serve Somebody, I Believe In You, When You Gonna Wake Up, When He Returns, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, Precious Angel, Slow Train, Covenant Woman, God Uses Ordinary People (Mona Lisa Young), Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking + Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others) (joined in single track), Solid Rock, Saving Grace Disc 2 - Saved, What Can I Do For You?, In The Garden, Blessed Be The Name, Pressing On Offmaster audience recording. Audio cdr>(feurio) wav> (flac frontend) flac. Watt Alexander in the "Gospel Project" cites two "source recordings" (as before, he guesses they may come from the same original). The first includes all the girls' songs, but is incomplete with respect to the Dylan tracks. The second lacks all but one of the girls' songs, but is complete with respect to Dylan's songs. The offmaster recording here is the second recording that the "Gospel Project" cites. This recording has some defects: "There is a brief drop-out during "Do Right" and some obtrusive audience chatter during "Saving Grace," Sadly, the quality of the recording suffers a great deal of fluctuation beginning with "Solid Rock" and marring every song thereafter." Thus while the performancesfor this show are of outstanding quality, the recording is not without problems. November 14, 1979 - Warfield, San Francisco - 2 CDs [top] Disc 1 - Gotta Serve Somebody, I Believe In You, When You Gonna Wake Up, When He Returns, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, Slow Train, Covenant Woman, Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking Disc 2 - Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others), Solid Rock, Saving Grace, Saved, What Can I Do For You?, In The Garden, Blessed Be The Name, Pressing On Offmaster of an audience recording taped by Legendary Taper E. The recording, like the other LTE recordings in this series, lacks all eight songs performed by the band. More surpisingly, it also lacks "Precious Angel" (which was performed after ""Man Gave Names to All the Animals"),as well as Dylan's rap preceding "Solid Rock." The absence of "Precious Angel" on this recording has led some researchers to not include it in the setlist, but there is apparently an alternative recording of the show which while including the band songs, is more severely incomplete with respect to Dylan's performance than the LTE recording, but does include "Precious Angel." LINEAGE: CDR > EAC > WAV > MKW > SHN. SOUND: very good! BOBTALK: I don’t know what kind of God you believe in, but I believe in the god that can raise the dead. If you only look around, you know; kind of think there’re so many people are so conditioned to bad news they don’t know good news when they hear it. So . . . We want you to know one thing: God don’t make promises that he don’t keep. Let he who thinketh he stand take heed, lest he fall. (before When You Gonna Wake Up?) Satan is called the God of this world. Is there anybody here who know that? [cheering] That’s right, he is called the God of this world and the Prince of the Power of the Air.” [audience: “He sucks!"] That’s right, he does. [laughter] But anyhow, we know he’s been defeated at the cross. I’m curious to know, how many of you all know that? [cheering] All right, there’s been a slow train coming for a long time, but now it’s picking up speed. Thank you, thank you, everybody. I’m gonna ask Regina . . . I’m gonna ask Regina to come out here and sing a song I know you’ll want to hear. It’s called: “Put Your Hand In The Hand Of The Man From Galilee,” so give her a warm welcome. You should know that. Anyway, you’ll need something . . . we’re not worried about all that – even though it is the last day of times, because, we see all this . . . hostages being taken here . . . drugs being outlawed there . . . all these sad stories that are, floating around . . . [audience: “Trouble In Mind!”] And we’re not worried about any of that, we don’t care about the atom bomb, any of that, because we know this world is going to be destroyed, if not by the word, and Christ will set up his kingdom in Jerusalem for a thousand years. When the lion lies down with the lamb, you know the lion will eat straw on that day. Also, if a man doesn’t live to be a hundred years old, he will be called accursed, that’s interesting, isn’t it? But we don’t mind, we know that’s coming. And if any man have not the spirit of Christ in him, he is a slave to bondage. You know bondage? I know you all know bondage. So you’ll need something just a little bit tough to hang on to. The name of this song is called, “Hanging On To A Solid Rock, Made Before The Foundation Of The World. And if you don’t have that to hang on to, you’d better look into it. You know who he is. On the keyboards tonight, give him a hand, Spooner Oldham. On the other set of keyboards, Terry Young. On lead guitar, Fred Tackett. On the drums tonight, Mr. Jim Keltner. Alright on the bass guitar Tim Drummond. Singing on the bottom tonight is Helena Springs. All right, singing the middle part is Regina McCreary. And singing on the top, is Mona Lisa Young. Remember now, you wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and power. And the ruthlessness of the darkness of this world, spiritual wickedness in higher places. So, if you’re down, that’s why you’re down. We wanna give all the praise, all the glory to God tonight. We know we don’t deserve it anyhow. One major exception: "Covenant Woman and "What Love I’m Feeling" are significantly marred by tape speed problems throughout. The tape speed problems found on "Covenant Woman" may have led the taper or a subsequent trader to edit out that song from their circulating tape, as most circulating copies of 20 November 1979 either lack this song or replace it with a performance taken from another night. This may explain why Glen Dundas reports that "Covenant Woman" was not performed this evening in his "Tangled Up In Tapes." Disc 1 - Monologue, If I've Got My Ticket Lord, It's Gonna Rain, Do Lord Remember Me, Look Up and Live By Faith, Oh Freedom, This Train, Gotta Serve Somebody, I Believe in You, When You Gonna Wake Up, When He Returns, Man Gave Names to All the Animals, Precious Angel, Slow Train Coming Disc 2 - Covenant Woman, What Love I'm Feeling (girls' song), Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking, Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others), Solid Rock, Saving Grace, What Can I Do For You?, Saved, In The Garden, Blessed Be The Name, Pressing On From an offmaster copy of an audience recording. Discussion: The "Gospel Project" discusses two "reference tapes" as the sources for its analysis. One of these tapes is complete, containing all the girls' songs. The "Covenant Woman" on this recording has speed problems. The "Gospel Project" indicates that circulating versions of this show sometimes lack "Covenant Woman" or substitute a performance of this song from some other night. This complete version has the speed-marred "Covenant Woman". The second "reference tape" described by "Gospel Project" lacks all the girls' songs and contains a "Covenant Woman" that comes from a different performance than 11-20-79. It seems likely that this incomplete recording and the "complete" version derive from the same original (LTE) recording. A more detailed examination would be required, but listening to a few tracks did not suggest any obvious fingerprints that would indicate they have a different ultimate source. The fact that both have an issue with respect to "Covenant Woman" suggests that the substitution may have been prompted by the speed problem. Thus it would seem reasonable that the two tapes are simpy different incarnations of a single (LTE) recording of the show.
